Book Buddies
Kindergarten – 1st grade

Wednesday, March 28: 4:45 – 5:45 P.M.
Theme: Animals
Children will read a nonfiction book about any animal before the program. (These books are located on the E Nonfiction shelf in the 595-599 and 636 sections.) They may read the book or parents may read to their children. Children will come to the program ready to share two facts about the animal in their book and will make a clay sculpture of their chosen animal

Wednesday, April 25: 4:45 - 5:45
Theme: Circle Stories
Circle Stories are stories that end in the same place where they began - the story makes a circle back to the beginning. Children will read The Best Nest by P. D. Eastman before the program. Copies of this book will be available at the March program or at the circulation desk after that time. At the program, we'll discuss The Best Nest and make our own circle stories. (You may check out Laura Numeroff's If You Give a . . . books (e.g. If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, If You Give a Pig a Pancake) if you'd like to read more circle stories.)

Family Reading and Science Program

Our annual Family Reading and Science Program will be held on Saturdays, January 21, February 11, and March 10. This year’s theme is Vital Signs: How Health Works. This program is for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, accompanied by an adult. It is provided in partnership with the University of Michigan’s Muesum of Natural History.

You are invited to attend all three workshops, but if you can only attend one or two, you are welcome to attend just the one(s) that fit your schedule.

Workshop 1: How YOU work: What are you made of and what do your vital signs mean?

We will explore what makes you who you are. We’ll look at the building blocks that make our bodies (cells and DNA), figure out what the numbers doctors talk about really tell us, and see how it all works together.

Workshop 2: Germs, parasites, and allergies: Oh, my! What makes us sick and what makes us well?

We will look at some of the things that make us sick, and find out what our bodies do to protect themselves.

75 of the Best Books for Young Children

Our library received an $800 grant from The Greater Milan Area Community Foundation to purchase additional books from the Public Library Association's list of 75 of the Best Books for Young Children (created by the West Bloomfield Township Public Library as part of its Grow Up Reading early literacy initiative).

The books purchased through this grant have begun to arrive in our library. Additional books will be added over the next two months.

Books from this list are currently located on the shelf with the new picture books and are identified with a "75" sticker on the spine.

Books purchased with funds from the grant may be seen in our catalog here. A complete list of the books from this list in our library may be seen here.

Miss Ashley is still traveling, but she took time to write Lauren a letter from Pennsylvania. Thank you to Lauren's Grandma Sherry and Grandpa Bill for taking her with you on your trip. It sounds like she is having a lot of fun!

Hi Lauren Bancroft,
I am sooo glad Grandma Sherry and Grandpa Bill took me on vacation with
them. I wish you were here though, I sure do miss you! I am hanging out at
the farm in Holbrook, Pennsylvania. It is in southwest Pa. Everyone here
likes the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pirates and Penguins. Grandma has
played hard with me and we are having lots of fun! Grandpa and grandma
and Coulton and I read stories and played. I went crawfish hunting in the
creek with Miss Becky and Miss Meadow. I ended up swimming, oops, but I'm
ok, don’t worry I didn't even get my face wet. You will have to teach me
how to get my face wet in the pool when I get home. We helped Aunt Bridget
wash her car; I am really having fun with water. Grandma took pictures of
me and Miss Becky making funny faces at one of the toll plazas in Ohio. I
found time for Piggy Pa and I to celebrate grandma’s 59th birthday hehehe
don't tell her I told you how old she is. I will be hanging out with Piggy
Pa on our way to Williamsport, New Hampshire, and Maryland. Stay tuned.

Piggy Pa's Letter from Pennsylvania

Piggy Pa is still traveling, but took time to write Alex a letter. Thank you to Alex's Grandpa Bill and Grandma Sherry for taking him to so many places. It looks like he is having fun helping on the farm!

Hi Alex Bancroft
Wow I have been soooo busy on my vacation with grandpa Bill and Grandma
Sherry. We are in Pennsylvania. I have spent a lot of the time in Aleppo,
Pa. It is in South Western Pa. I get to help grandpa with all of his heavy
equipment as he is fixing up an old farm for hunting and camping. They have
about 70 acres. I helped with the dozer grading the land and with the
backhoe cleaning up and digging. I got to play on uncle Marty's boat. I
made time to hang out with Uncle Marty, Aunt Bridget and cousin Colton. We
had a Birthday party for Grandma Sherry with Ice Cream Cake for all yeah!
And I even ate some for you too Alex!!!!! I am off now to Williamsport, Pa.
where the little league baseball World Series is held. Then off to New
Hampshire to Uncle Bill’s And Aunt Ang's, then to Maryland to see Uncle
Steve and Aunt Jen along with cousin's Nina, Taylor, and Kennedy……………so
more updates to come.

Frank's Trip to Germany and France

Frank Pig has returned from Germany and France. He is the first of our pigs to travel internationally. Thank you, Gerry, for hosting Frank and showing us some of Europe.

Frank Pig went on a business trip with his host Gerry to Koblenz, Germany and Brest, France.

I arrived in Koblenz, Germany, which is over 4,100 miles away from Milan. The plane ride took 8 ½ hours and Germany is 6 hours ahead of Milan.

Here is a picture from our hotel window in Germany.

This is a fountain in downtown Koblenz. I have never seen anything like this before.

I really liked this view, it is so beautiful.

I then traveled 600 miles from Koblenz, Germany to Brest, France.

This is a beach we visited, the bay leads out to the Atlantic Ocean. We didn’t get to go swimming, because it was only 60 degrees while we were here.

I had a lot of fun during my stay in Germany and France. I hope to go back sometime, but for now I can‘t wait to get home.

Stuffed Animal Sleepover

The library hosted a Stuffed Animal Sleepover last night. Children and their stuffed animals listened to stories, sang, danced, and created crafts during a special Storytime. When the children went home, teen "stuffed animal sitters" watched over the animals. The animals read books, did puzzles, watched DVDs, played on the computers, investigated the book drops, ate snacks from the freezer and refrigerator, helped check out books, and more. When the children picked up their animals today, they received booklets including photos from their animals' adventures last night. See more pictures from the program here.

Rose's Trip to Pennsylvania

Albino deer characterized by white hair and red pupils. A turkey keeps him company.

Elk antlers are shed each spring when the new ones begin to grow. People follow the elk for days waiting for the antlers to fall off. They are quite a treasure. Elk antlers grow an inch a day.

Harty Pig's Adventures in Ohio

Harty Pig traveled to Delta, Ohio, which is 50 miles south of Milan. Thank you to Harty's hosts for taking him to such interesting places.

Here is Harty's letter about the fun week.

My hosts were called Grandma and Grandpa. I went to the Delta Chicken Festival Parade. I also got to go swimming in the pool. One day we went to the Toledo Zoo and saw the new baby elephant, "Lucas". There was even a rock wall there that I was able to climb. I had a really great time. I hope to go back again.

Global Explorers

During Global Explorers today, children made khamsas. They are good luck charms that originated in Morocco. The word khamsa means "five," and khamsas are in the shape of a hand with five fingers. The children used a variety of craft supplies to make their own unique khamsas.

Pigs at the Library

Penelope and Peter Pig have been visiting the library. They have read a lot of fun books.

During World Travelers today, they watched a DVD about Kenya. Their favorite parts were the dancers and the animals on the safari. They think John should have some pigs on his farm, too! They also enjoyed watching the children dance to Pata Pata.

Penelope is showing Peter where we are in Michigan, and Peter is showing Penelope where Kenya is.

Other pigs who stayed in Milan are getting to know their human friends. One of our pigs had a busy day today. She went shopping, ate out, and attended this week's World Travelers program. Another pig has had a quiet week at home; we think she's sneaking peeks at the TV!

Peter and Penelope Pig peeked in on Storytime this week. They heard stories about Africa and played Ghanaian rattles.

Traveling Pigs

Yesterday, during our World Travelers program, children heard the book Toot and Puddle by Holly Hobbie. In this story, Toot the pig travels around the world and sends postcards back to his friend Puddle, who has fun while staying home.

The children then created two pigs - one to travel and one to stay home. We mailed our traveling pigs to family and friends throughout the United States. A pig headed to South Carolina was wisely dressed in a tank top so she wouldn't get too hot. Another pig (in the picture below) packed a suitcase for the trip.
