Library Card Sign-up Month

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, a time when the nation’s public libraries highlight the value of a library card. Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. It is a time when libraries nationwide join together to remind parents, caregivers, and students that signing up for a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning.

A library card provides free access to borrow books, magazines, DVDs, audiobooks, music, downloadable e-books, and more.  Milan Public Library also provides a spectrum of free services, including local history materials, research databases, help finding information, computer access, internet access, and programs for adults, teens, and children.

Although a library card is necessary to check out items from the library, resources at Milan Public Library are available to everyone in our community.  Information about eligibility for a library card and how to register for a card is available here.

This year’s Library Card Sign-Up Month Honorary Chair is Snoopy, the beagle featured in the Peanuts comic strip, calling attention to the supportive role libraries and library professionals play in the education, academic achievement, and development of children.

Everyone who signs up for a library card in September will receive a fun Peanuts-themed item.  Join  us to celebrate again on October 1 with cake and other refreshments and activities at the library!

Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children. Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.  The beginning of a new school year is a good time for children to get library cards and discover the opportunities available at the library.

Our library has recently initiated a student library card allowing free borrowing privileges to students enrolled in Milan Area Schools.  We welcome all students in our community to use our library to support their academic assignments and personal reading interests.  Stop by the library to study, use a computer, research a school assignment, or choose a new book to read.  See more information about the requirements of a student library card at our library here.

If you don't have a library card, stop by this month to sign up.  If you already have a card, stop by to use it and consider inviting a friend or neighbor to sign up for a card.
