National Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month. We're celebrating with our first annual "Hello Haiku" and poetry-themed book clubs.

Hello Haiku!

The library invites you to submit haiku by April 30 (for children and teens) or April 25 (for adults  by April 30 for adults now, too!)  Poems will be displayed in the library.  Everyone who enters a poem will be entered in a prize drawing. 

Haiku is a traditional form of Japanese poetry.  Haiku poems contain 3 lines.  The first line has 5 syllables.  The second line has 7 syllables.  The third line has 5 syllables.

Here is another example of haiku: Libraries are great They have books, movies, and more I can't wait to go!

Youth may pick up an entry form from the library or download one here to submit your haiku.  Entry forms for adults are available at the library.

 Book Clubs

Children's book clubs this month will be poetry themed. 

Book Buddies (kindergartners - 2^nd graders) are reading any book of poetry.

Bookworms (2^nd - 3^rd grade) are reading poetry by Jack Prelutsky.

Chapter Chatters (3^rd - 5^th graders) are reading poetry by Shel Silverstein.

Children will bookmark their favorite poems as they read.  During the program, we'll share our favorite poems and write our own poetry to add to the Poetree (poetry + tree!)
