Children's Events - August



We have in-person and virtual events this month.  Older and younger siblings are welcome to attend with the child in the suggested age group.

Storytime (ages 3-5)
Fridays at 10:30 A.M.

Stories, songs, dance, fingerplays, and more. We're following our Summer Reading theme, Tails and Tales, and are reading about animals this month. 

We will meet on ZOOM on August 6 and August 20.
We will meet in WILSON PARK on August 13 and August 27.

You'll code (on paper) a tractor to collect produce and get to the barn with additional challenges each time.

Origami Animals

You'll create a variety of origami animals.

You'll work together to solve an escape room.

Saturday Stories

Saturday Stories will be held on Zoom at 10:30 A.M. on the Saturdays listed below. We will add additional dates as we schedule them.

These events are planned for preschoolers through early elementary ages. All ages are welcome.

We'll read 1 or 2 picture books and participate in related activities. Craft projects will be available for you to pick up from the library and take home to make.


Saturday Stories with Milan Area Fire Department
Saturday, October 17
We'll read a book about firefighters and then a Milan Area Fire Department firefighter will take us on a virtual tour of the fire station and talk about fire safety.
Take home crafts will be available to pick up during any of our Curbside Pickup hours beginning on Monday, October 12. Crafts will include a cardstock fire hat to color and wear, a cut/color/paste fire truck craft, and additional fire-themed activity pages.

Saturday Stories: Halloween
Saturday, October 31
We'll read 1 or 2 fun books about Halloween, sing a Halloween song, and participate in other Halloween-themed activities.  
Crafts will be available to pick up during any of our Curbside Pickup hours beginning on Wednesday, October 21. Crafts will include a paper spider project that can be worn as a hat or set on a surface, a paper pumpkin craft, and additional Halloween-themed activity pages.

Cathy Toth and her dog Hazel are members of the Alliance of Therapy Dogs.  They will be at the library on Monday, February 3 for children to read to Hazel the dog.

Reading to Hazel provides children with a relaxed environment to practice reading and gain confidence in their reading skills.

Children may bring a book to read or choose one from the library.

We are accepting registrations for 10-minute increments throughout the hour Hazel will be here.  Please register here.

Stop by the library any time between 1:00 and 3:00 or between 6:00 and 7:30 to play board games, card games, cup stacking, and more. Best for kindergartners and older. All ages welcome.

Learn how a books gets to the library, from how we choose which books to buy to how they end up on the shelves ready to check out. You'll help choose books for us to purchase this month. Registration is required. Please register here.

Registration is requested (but not required).

Come any time between 2:00 and 3:30 to create a spring-themed craft project. We'll have a variety of options, so there will be something for all ages from preschool through fifth grade. The library will provide pumpkins and craft supplies for you to transform a pumpkin into anything you'd like to create - a jack-o-lantern, a book or movie character, or anything else!  Registration is required.  Please register here.

We'll be downtown (in Tolan Square or by the Main Street parking lot) to participate in Downtown Trick-or-Treating.

Drummunity & Ice Cream Social

Drummunity is a unique, interactive and very fun event for all ages. Lori Fithian will bring her collection of instruments from all over the world including some she’s created herself. Lori’s program is an exciting, hands-on, family program with a message of community-building, peace, diversity, wellness, ecology and rhythmic fun. 
The Drummunity performance will be followed by an Ice Cream Social.

Touch a Truck

Our Touch a Truck event is this Saturday, July 15 from 10:00 until 11:30 A.M. in Wilson Park.

Community organizations and businesses will bring vehicles for you to explore.  You'll be able to sit in the drivers' seats, walk through the backs, and learn about the jobs they do.

You'll see a police car, crane boom truck, Red Cross emergency response vehicle, FedEx truck, flatbed tow truck, motorcycle, ambulance, and more.

Decipher clues to find additional clues throughout the library and solve the puzzle.  Reading the book is NOT required to participate.  (However, it is a good book, so we recommend it!)

New Programs



The new year brings two new youth programs: Createapalooza for preschoolers through 1st graders and Buildapalooza for 2nd through 5th graders.

Each of these events will be held on the second Saturday of each month and will include a building challenge and time to build with LEGO bricks, Squigs, and more.

In Storytime, we'll kick off the new year with a "new" theme.  We'll read about, sing about, and craft about new pets, new babies, new books, and new things this month.

Our elementary book clubs are reading about names (Book Buddies), Dolphins at Daybreak (Bookworms), and inventions/inventors (Chapter Chatters).

Trudy Bulkey, as Mother Goose, will present a Mother Goose Storytime on Friday, August 26 at 10:00 A.M. in the Community House (the building across the street from the Senior Center and the police station).
