New Programs

The new year brings two new youth programs: Createapalooza for preschoolers through 1st graders and Buildapalooza for 2nd through 5th graders.

Each of these events will be held on the second Saturday of each month and will include a building challenge and time to build with LEGO bricks, Squigs, and more.

See more here and register here.

Storytime, elementary book clubs, and TNT (teen and tween) Books and Bites will also continue this month. See details and register through the links below.

In Storytime, we'll kick off the new year with a "new" theme.  We'll read about, sing about, and craft about new pets, new babies, new books, and new things this month.

Our elementary book clubs are reading about names (Book Buddies), Dolphins at Daybreak (Bookworms), and inventions/inventors (Chapter Chatters).

See our TNT page for more information about TNT Books and Bites and other TNT programs.

Bookworms Book Club

This month, our Bookworms book club for second and third graders read Space Taxi: Archie Takes Flight by Wendy Mass.  When Archie is 8 years, 8 months, and 8 days old, he is able to go to work with his father.  He knew his father drove a taxi, but he didn't know he drove passengers in space instead of on Earth.  Archie is his father's navigator as they begin a trip that becomes quite an adventure.  Archie Takes Flight is the first book in a series, so if you enjoy it, you can read more about Archie in two more books

Pockets the cat was the group's favorite character in this book.  Here are a couple of illustrations of Pockets:

After discussing the book, we made models of our own space taxis.  Here's one:

Our next Bookworms program will be held on Tuesday, November 10 at 4:45 P.M.  Read any book in Ron Roy's Calendar Mysteries series before the program.  During the program, we'll discuss the books and solve our own mystery.  See more information and register here.

New Children's Newsletter

We have started a new monthly children's e-newsletter to provide information about children's programs, new children's books, library news, and more.

You may read this month's newsletter here and sign up to receive future newsletters here.

If you asked to receive the newsletter when you registered your child for our Summer Reading Program, you should have received this newsletter by email on September 1.

If you did not receive the newsletter and would like to, please sign up here.

If you received emails about programs last year, but did not sign up for the newsletter this year, you will not receive emails.  The new newsletter is replacing the emails with program information from last year.  You will only receive the information if you sign up for the newsletter.

What would you like to see in future newsletters?  Let us know here.

If you would also like to receive the TNT (Teen & Tween) newsletter, you may sign up here.

National Poetry Month Poetree

April is National Poetry Month.  Our Bookworms and Chapter Chatters book clubs wrote poetry to create a "poetree" this month.

Bookworms read poetry by Jack Prelutsky and shared their favorites during book club.  Did you know most of his poetry can be sung to the tune of "99 Bottles of Pop on the Wall?"  We had fun reading and singing his poetry.

Chapter Chatters read poetry by Shel Silverstein and shared their favorites before writing their own.

Stop in to read a poem or check out a book of poetry. See our catalog here for poetry books in our children's area or browse the nonfiction 811 areas of our library.

Bookworms Book Club

Our Bookworms group discussed Mr. Popper's Penguins and created penguin projects during this month's program.

The Bookworms book club for 2nd and 3rd graders meets monthly.  We're reading Nancy Clancy: Super Sleuth for December's program.  You may pick up a copy of the book from the circulation desk and join us for the program on December 11.  See the book club tab for details and to register.

Bookworms' Poetry

Bookworms (2nd and 3rd graders) read poetry by Jack Prelutsky this month. They each marked a few (or a lot!) of their favorites to share during the monthly meeting yesterday. They read some and sang some after learning that many of Prelutsky's poems can be sung to the tune of the Girl Scout song or 99 Bottles of Pop on the Wall. We briefly discussed haiku, shape poems, and acrostic poems and then wrote our own poetry.
