Children's Book Week

Children's Book Week is next week, May 7 - 13.


1.  Stop by the library to check out some great children's books.

2.  Contribute to our display in the library.  Print one of the story starters below, create your own ending, and turn it in to the library.  We'll post the stories for everyone to read during Children's Book Week.

Before the program:

Mothers will choose a book for their children to read. This can be the mom’s favorite book as a child or any favorite children’s book. Children and their mothers (or any other adult who would like to participate) will read the book before the program.

During the program:

Participants will discuss the books they read, enjoy snacks, and create a craft project.

Bookworms' Poetry

Bookworms (2nd and 3rd graders) read poetry by Jack Prelutsky this month. They each marked a few (or a lot!) of their favorites to share during the monthly meeting yesterday. They read some and sang some after learning that many of Prelutsky's poems can be sung to the tune of the Girl Scout song or 99 Bottles of Pop on the Wall. We briefly discussed haiku, shape poems, and acrostic poems and then wrote our own poetry.

Poetry Month

April is Poetry Month. We're celebrating with poetry book clubs.

Bookworms (2nd and 3rd graders) will meet Tuesday, April 17 at 4:45 to discuss poetry by Jack Prelutsky. See a list of books in our library here. Bookmark a few of your favorite poems to share at the program. We’ll discuss the books and write our own poetry.

Chapter Chatters (4th and 5th graders) will meet Tuesday, April 24 at 4:45 to discuss poetry by Shel Silverstein. See a list of books in our library here. Bookmark a few of your favorite poems to share at the program. We’ll discuss the books and write our own poetry.

Monthly children's book clubs will continue this spring. These book clubs are funded by a grant from Target. Registration is required. Please register online here or call the library at 439-1240.

Book Buddies
Kindergarten – 1st grade

Wednesday, March 28: 4:45 – 5:45 P.M.
Theme: Animals
Children will read a nonfiction book about any animal before the program. (These books are located on the E Nonfiction shelf in the 595-599 and 636 sections.) They may read the book or parents may read to their children. Children will come to the program ready to share two facts about the animal in their book and will make a clay sculpture of their chosen animal

Wednesday, April 25: 4:45 - 5:45
Theme: Circle Stories
Circle Stories are stories that end in the same place where they began - the story makes a circle back to the beginning. Children will read The Best Nest by P. D. Eastman before the program. Copies of this book will be available at the March program or at the circulation desk after that time. At the program, we'll discuss The Best Nest and make our own circle stories. (You may check out Laura Numeroff's If You Give a . . . books (e.g. If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, If You Give a Pig a Pancake) if you'd like to read more circle stories.)

Read The Chocolate Touch by Patrick Skene Catlin. Copies of the book will be available at the February program and at the circulation desk after that time. We’ll discuss the book and participate in activities related to the story.
